In recent years, with the proliferation of the internet and the widespread adoption of open-source programming languages, cybersecurity awareness has grown significantly among the public. However, many individuals and businesses still lack the knowledge and tools to effectively enhance their online safety. Moreover, it seems that news headlines frequently feature high-profile corporations falling victim to cyberattacks, further highlighting the importance of cybersecurity. One incident that personally impacted me was the 2011 hack of Sony’s PlayStation Network, which rendered online gaming services on the (then-current) PlayStation 3 unusable for approximately two weeks. As a gamer, this was a frustrating experience, especially with the release of a new Mortal Kombat game at that time!
Despite my gaming interests, I now work in the logistics industry, and it was disconcerting to learn that Estes Express, one of the largest LTL carriers in the USA, recently experienced a cyberattack. The attack compromised their entire IT infrastructure, resulting in disruptions for customers attempting to contact the company via phone, all of which displayed a “call could not be completed” message. Additionally, their website became inaccessible during this period. Right now, Estes’s website greets visitors with an apology message, although it may come across as lacking from a human perspective.
Regardless, it is crucial that Estes’s systems reboot happens quickly. In summary, cybersecurity awareness has increased with the internet’s growth and the use of open-source programming languages. However, cyberattacks on major corporations remain a prevalent issue, underscoring the need for robust cybersecurity measures. Recent cyberattacks, such as the one affecting Estes Express, emphasize the importance of protecting IT infrastructure and supply chain operations.
